At the Center for Critical Discourse (CCD), we believe that academic dialogue must serve as a catalyst for real-world change. On January 29, 2026, our seminar, “Island Women: A Feminist Environmentalist Vision for St. Martin’s Island,” did exactly that. While the world views the Island through a lens of tourism, CCD brought the “Island Women” to Dhaka to tell a different story. of 420 missing fishermen, abducted from our sovereign waters by the Arakan Army.
The impact was immediate. Within 48 hours of our seminar, the nation’s leading newspaper, Prothom Alo, not only covered the heartbreaking testimonies of the families we hosted but also took a decisive stand. On January 31, they published a scathing editorial demanding state accountability, mirroring the questions raised during our sessions.
For our international audience, we have translated both the on-the-ground report and the powerful editorial that followed. These pieces highlight how CCD’s platform moved a “silent” crisis to the forefront of national security discourse.
