As our Foundational Stance, we declare that the current pedagogical landscape is not neutral; it is a manifestation of a repressive structure, peripheral, semi-feudal and neoliberal hegemony designed to maintain the 'culture of silence.' We refuse to participate in a ‘banking model of education,’ a term coined by the Brazilian marxist philosopher Paulo Freire in his 1970 masterpiece, ‘Pedagogy of the Oppressed’, that serves only to maintain the global treadmill of production and social stagnation.
The Centre for Critical Discourse (CCD) stands as a pedagogical intervention against the epistemic violence of colonial knowledge and the dominant schools of thought. We exist to foster an alternative discourse, to hegemony the narratives-discourses emerging from the margins, and to claim the ground back for the oppressed forces of organic intellectual silenced by power structures. Our presence is a scholarly indictment of the status quo and a commitment to the transformative pursuit of a decolonized society of justice and communities.
We manifest as a progressive intellectual research hub to ensure our research outputs contribute to real-world transformation. We employ critical methods with a strong emphasis on action research. Our methods are participatory, transformative, and express solidarity with oppressed communities. The Centre for Critical Discourse (CCD) exists to identify problems and co-develop struggles with the people. In alignment with our action research methods, our intersection of theory and praxis is enacted within participatory workshops, public discourse analysis, grassroot activisms, and the action oriented synthesis of radical art, film, and writings.
The articulation of counter-hegemonic discourses serves as a foundation for emancipatory knowledge. By bridging contemporary critiques with transformative action, this framework enacts meaningful change, empowering communities to not only challenge existing structures but to radically reimagine them.
